How can I paint the hallway with carpet and not get paint on the carpet? Plastic doesn't work?

The carpet comes right up the baseboard and I can't use plastic. So how can I paint the baseboard all the way down without getting paint on the carpet? How can I paint the hallway with carpet and not get paint on the carpet? Plastic doesn't work?
Im a professional painter. I dont use tape. Go out and buy a nice paint brush at a ';Paint Store'; that has soft bristles. Get a 2 or 2 1/2 inch brush straight not angled. Dip gently into the paint swipe both sides on the side of the paint can, start high and its a technique of pushing the paint downward behind the carpet. The soft '; thin '; bristles will reach behind the carpet and get the baseboard. I dont think the others understand what your talking about when you say painting the baseboard. You dont want to remove the baseboard because its not needed and its a huge pain in the ***. You cant tape high plush carpet because you have to reach far down. Just get a big drop cloth as close to the wall as possible and dont use too much paint. Its not that hard at all. Oil base paints are easier to work with when you are doing this kind of painting because its more ';sticky'; and wont run like the water based paint.

Thats it cut and dry, thats how the pros do it.

Tape.
You can use carpet shields:

For some reason, these are hard to find in retail stores. I've looked recently without success. Since I needed them right away (actually yesterday), I ended up using curved metal slats from an old window blind.
What you have to do is take up the baseboard and paint it outside (or somewhere safe to paint).

If this is not an option for you, get this special tape. It comes with tape on one side and folded up paper on the other side. So you could (sort of) tape around the carpet and then unfold the paper so it covers it the rest of the way. Have a damp rag on hand--you'll be able to clean up little drops if you get to them immediately.
most hardware stores carry a plastic in rolls that has a mild adhesive on it made especially for covering carpet, works great
You should be able to get masking tape under the baseboard and over the carpet. Use the wide stuff. Use plastic too to cover the middle of the hallway. Another thing that works well is thin cardboard. Slide that under the baseboard and move it along as you paint.
2 inch masking tape tucked under the baseboard or carpet paint shield, just keep it wiped off as you use it, Either one works well, but I would use the shield. When you get to the door jambs you can use the ends of your first two fingers to hold the carpet down . so you can paint those small returns on the trim. And also get yourself a quality paint brush, not the cheap ones.
You can buy a product from hardware stores that will ensure that you don't get paint onto the carpet. It is a piece of hard plastic that is placed between the carpet and the wall. I have used one and they work perfectly. Unfortunately I don't know what they are called but the sales person will know what they are. Good Luck and have fun painting.
