How do I go about painting a picture with house paint. Is enamel paint plastic house paint?

It is entirely possible to do. The two famous artists that come to mind that used house paint are Jackson Pollock and Maude Lewis. Very different types of painters so you can do what you like but both of these painters' work is now deteriorating faster that they would if they used artists oils. They are being saved by restoration but artists oils will last hundreds of years whereas these two artists painted in the fifties and sixties.

Hello Roselle.

First I would ask how big is the job? Is it outside or inside? Is the surface metel? Do you want a shinny effect? Outside, I would use enamel since enamel can deal with weather more effectively. If it is inside, I personally would use a water based acrylic paint. You can use enamel acrylic, but for health reasons, and clean up it's a little more cumbersome i.e. respirator, ventilation. With water based acrylic, you have a wider variety, and it is easier to manage. If you spill, all you need is little bit of soap and water. True enamel is not that forgiving. So from answer, it all depends on the situation. Enamel is more suited for metel, pottery. It creates a shinny glossy look to it. If that is the effect you are looking for, then I would look towards the enamel. You can however get a shinny similar effect with an acrylic. You would just treat the finished area with a clear coat.

If the area is already painted with enamel, you can paint over it with acrylic assuming the paint is already dry. Depending on the job, I would put a white base first, that would bring out the color. Test a small area first to make sure the water base acrylic would adhere to the enamel properly.

Most houses though use Latex that produce an enamel glossy effect. I would validate to make sure it's enamel. If it is a latex, a water based acrylic would work fine.

Wikipedia has a lot of information that can help you make a choice.

Ah!!! If you do not want your painting to last then use house paint. One paints a house approx every 5-7 years. Your painting will start degrading in half a decade! Do you know Pollok's art works are falling off the canvas? Most of the works shown in museums are faithful reproductions of his work and the originals are stored in temperature controlled storage.

I will say there is freedom to using cheap materials -you won't be held back and your work will show that. But use the materials meant for the project. If you're using canvas: use art level acrylic paint. If you're painting a house: use house paint.
House paint is great medium ..I have used it for 25 yrs...even tar I have painted with...

house paint is latex acrylic...

enamels are usually oil or petrol based...they now make water based enamels

as for it not lasting...houses sit outside in the elements....that is why you have to paint them again and again....

you don't have to purchase';high quality'; overpriced supplies to make great art....for centuries they used paint made out of milk and other used eggs......don't get hung up on that claptrap

Pollock's work archival problems has more to do with how he painted as opposed to using house paint. the more layers the more air in between the layers.. contract and expand and weaken the overall surface....

House paint is great....you can even mix it with artists acrylics which have a higher pigment content.....

and the big box depot stores sell the ooops paint for 5 bucks a gallon and 1-2 $ for a quart.....

I highly recommend it
