My daughter has a Little Tykes picnic table that has faded from being out in the sun. What is the proper way to paint it without the paint coming off? What is the proper way to paint faded plastic.?

Instead of painting it, I have another suggestion. I suspect the plastic has not faded per se. More likely the top layer is actually oxidized. It's kinda the same thing that used to happen to the paint with older cars before clear coat finishes became more polular.

You can bring back the oringinal color and luster by removing this layer of oxidation. Steel wool and some elbow grease will work. You could use some polishing compound made for plastic (look in the automotive section or hardware dept of your fav megastore) to speed up the process. Or you could use a very fine sandpaper but the sandpaper will leave scratches that will make the plastic look hazy.

If you are intent on painting, remember that prep work is the most important step in painting and you should probably remove the oxidation layer anyway. Otherwise the paint will not adhere and it will look even worse. Good luck!
