Why would you want to paint it? A gas tank is made a specific color so everybody knows it's a gas tank, and knows not to fool around with it. You change the color, you're making a future danger for yourself.What type of paint should I use to paint plastic gas tanks for a boat.?
The only possible one that might work is Flexabar paint... Another option is to use one light coat of a viynl-based paint cut heavily with thinner. This will tint the tank, rather than color it, but it won't flake off the next day.
