Can spray paint be applied on plastic?

I am going to do some handicraft with used plastic bottles as materials. I would like to add colour to the plastic surface by using spray paint. Is this going to possible, or will the colour not stick on the plastic?





If so, what steps can be taken to retain using the plastic material while being able to add colour?

Yes there is a spray paint specifically for plastic.


Read the label or ask the guy at the hardware store.

With all due respect first of all the only answer you needed was ';YES';





Also with no offense ANY spray paint will coat plastic. Certainly you might use an epoxy or rustoleum; but it isn't strictly neccesary. The agents in spray paint (Which is NOT strictly latex) will cause it to bond to any surface. The only issues will be with cellular foam.

Nothing will be permanent, but if you use a high adhesion primer first, any paint will work.
Go to Lowe's, Menards, etc - there is a particular brand of spray paint made to use on plastic.





If you already have some paint you want to use, you can try it and see if it works on the plastic you have. It will probably stick, but be sure that the plastic is clean - no grease, oils, dirt, etc. It would help if you roughed it up just a bit. Take some fine sandpaper and just scuff the plastic a bit, just enough to get rid of any shine.





Also, if there's any sort of label or paper glued to the plastic, the paint will probably cover it OK, but you'll still see the outline or shape of the label very clearly. Get rid of that first if that will be a problem.
Yes, it won't last very long though. It will easily chip and peel.

Krylon brand makes a great paint thats manufactured for use on plastics. You can buy it at any home improvement store, Walmart, Target, most K-mart super stores.
Biggest thing also is to CLEAN the area you want to paint with Alcohol or something like that before you paint. It would not hurt to scuff the area with a scouring pad either before cleaning.
