Fine sand it and spray it with spray cans.
Model paints are really good to use...Testors and Model Masters are both good brands.





Depending on what you are painting, another option is to *lightly* sand your object and then spray the finished/painted object with a sealer; a plain gloss or matte finish spray will do fine and are easy to purchase at any hobby or craft store.
